Dubai’s Latin American scene has seen a slew of new openings as of late, but one has slid in without much fanfare, and in an authentic, and very un-Dubai way, relied on word of mouth and positive reviews. Hailing from Argentina, Sucre is the latest addition to Dubai’s DIFC hotspot Gate Village, and, like its venues in Buenos Aires and London’s Soho, it draws in a stylish, well-heeled foodie-type crowd. The restaurant itself is an ode to the bold and diverse flavours of Latin America, with the menu telling the story of Master Chef Fernando Trocca. Dishes are a fiery combination of Latin American, Spanish and Italian influences and cooking focuses on open-fire cooking on both wood and charcoal.
The space
An embodiment of chef Trocca’s menu. Simple, yet complex, stripped back, yet full of quirky and understated detail. Guests enter the restaurant via an arched walkway lit by chandeliers made from decanters to a dark-hued sultry dining room reminiscent of the colour of burning embers. The sea of tables peppers the surprisingly expansive space which spans an open-air terrace and a more cosy, intimate area deep within the restaurant. The same decanter-covered chandeliers hang around the space and colourful chairs, patterns and wall hangings feature traditional Latin American prints, an ode to the restaurant’s homeland. At the heart is an open-air kitchen allowing diners to see the flames elegantly dancing on the ‘parilla’ (grill). The presence of fire creates a warm, cosy and welcoming environment – all while matching up to DIFC’s strict style requirements.
